What Is a Value-Based Resolution?
Values are the deeper principles that shape how we live, love, work, and connect. They reflect what matters to us at our core.
Where a traditional goal might say, lose ten pounds, a value-based resolution might say, nurture my physical well-being. One is about a number. The other is about how you want to feel, show up, and live more fully.
When we base our resolutions on values, we create space for flexibility and growth. And we are more likely to stay motivated and aligned throughout the year—because the resolution actually reflects who we are and what we care about.
Why Resolutions Fail—and How Values Help
Most people do not follow through on resolutions because:

Values, on the other hand:
- Offer direction, not pressure

Think of values as the compass, and goals as the steps you take to move forward. Without the compass, the steps can feel aimless. With it, you know where you are headed.
How to Set Value-Based Resolutions

- Reflect on What Matters to You
Create space for honest reflection. What do you care about? What gives your life meaning? Where do you feel most fulfilled, proud, or energized? Consider areas like family, community, health, faith, creativity, or growth. - Write It Down
Don’t just name a value like family. Get specific. Is it connection? Support? Presence? Clarity helps translate values into action. - Prioritize
You can value many things, but not everything can be a priority at once. Focus on 2 or 3 values that feel most alive for you right now. - Translate Each Value into Daily Life
Ask yourself: If I lived out this value more fully, what would change? What would I do more of? Less of?
If you value health, it might look like moving your body more, cooking meals at home, or creating better sleep routines.
If you value connection, it might mean calling a friend each week, putting your phone down at dinner, or spending more time outdoors with your family.
