Back-to-School Anxiety: How to Help Your Child Feel Ready Again

July 24, 2025 by MGSCTT32894238 Leave a Comment

The back-to-school season is full of transitions—new teachers, different routines, and social adjustments. While some kids embrace the change with excitement, others experience a quiet wave of anxiety that builds as the first day approaches.

At Achieve Wellness in Orange, CT, we often work with children and teens who feel overwhelmed during this time of year. Anxiety around school is common, and the good news is there are ways to support your child’s mental and emotional well-being through it.

Common Signs of Back-to-School Anxiety

Not all children express anxiety the same way. While some might say they’re nervous, others show it through behaviors. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Trouble sleeping or frequent nightmares
  • Complaints of stomachaches or headaches
  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Avoidance of school-related conversations
  • Clinginess or fear of separation
  • Declining interest in school or activities they once enjoyed

These signs can be your child’s way of saying, “I’m struggling,” even if they don’t have the words for it yet.

What’s Behind the Anxiety?

Back-to-school anxiety can stem from many things: fear of new social dynamics, academic pressures, past negative experiences, or even just the abrupt shift from summer freedom to structure. Some children feel pressure to perform, while others worry about being liked or fitting in.

Understanding the root of your child’s stress is the first step toward helping them manage it.

How Therapy Can Help

Working with a child or adolescent therapist creates a safe, nonjudgmental space where your child can express their feelings, learn tools to manage anxiety, and build confidence. At Achieve Wellness, our therapists use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), play therapy, and mindfulness to help young clients regulate their emotions and feel more in control.

We also work closely with parents to provide strategies that support progress at home and in school.

Tips for Parents at Home

  • Talk Early and Often: Ask open-ended questions about how your child feels about going back to school. Let them know it’s okay to be nervous.
  • Practice the Routine: A few days before school starts, ease into the wake-up time, mealtime, and bedtime schedules. Familiarity brings comfort.
  • Avoid Over-Scheduling: Build in time for rest, play, and calm—not just productivity.
  • Validate Their Feelings: Even if their worries seem small to you, they’re big to your child. Listening without dismissing goes a long way.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to feel like a battle—for your child or for you.

📞 If your child is struggling with anxiety, we’re here to help. Schedule a session today and support their return to school with calm, confidence, and care.
