Back-to-School Conversations for Parents and Kids

August 28, 2025 by MGSCTT32894238 Leave a Comment

The backpacks are packed. The alarms are set. But what about your child’s emotional readiness?

The return to school brings more than just new schedules and sharpened pencils. It’s a shift socially, mentally, and emotionally. At Achieve Wellness Center, we encourage families to take this time of year as an opportunity to strengthen connection. That starts with simple, intentional conversations that show your child you’re listening, without judgment or pressure.

These five questions are more than just check-ins. They’re an open door to deeper trust, understanding, and emotional wellness.

  1. “What are you excited about?”

Let your child name what they’re looking forward to. It could be seeing a favorite teacher, joining a club, or just having pizza on Fridays again. Starting with excitement reminds them that school isn’t just stress—it’s full of opportunity too.

  1. “What’s something you’re nervous about?”

Everyone feels nervous about something, especially at the start of the year. Let your child know that anxiety is normal and welcome in the conversation. It’s not about solving it right away—it’s about letting them speak without shame.

  1. “How can I support you without hovering?”

Support looks different for every child. Some want daily check-ins. Others just want space. Asking this question gives them agency and builds trust that you respect their independence.

  1. “What’s one goal you want to work on this year?”

From making a new friend to improving in math, the goal isn’t the goal—it’s giving them ownership. When they set a goal, even a small one, they begin building their own self-leadership and motivation.

  1. “What would make this year feel like a win?”

Invite them to define success on their own terms socially, emotionally, or academically. This gives you insight into what matters most to them, and where they may need more support.

Therapy Can Help Strengthen These Conversations

If these talks bring up worries, sadness, or stress for you or your child, therapy can be a valuable resource. At Achieve Wellness Center, we work with children, teens, and families to build emotional awareness, reduce anxiety, and navigate transitions with more confidence.
